How are addresses displayed in the Location Picker?

Created by Mark Eves, Modified on Tue, 26 Apr, 2022 at 3:58 PM by Mark Eves

When using the location picker or deriving a location from a mobile device, the Customer or User will select an address and/or a point on the map.

There are two addressing options within the MCS Platform:-

1. To use the native mapping system of the interface used to access the platform i.e. internet browser, native app mapping service, to derive an address.

2. Subscribe to the Platform’s LLPG service which holds all UK Addresses as per AddressBase® Premium dataset.

1. Native Addressing and Mapping

When using the location picker or deriving a location from a mobile device, the Customer or User will select an address and/or a point on the map from the mapping system which is embedded into the access point they are using.  The co-ordinates from this address are then used to pinpoint onto a map and to allocate to the the nearest UPRN.

2. Subscribe to the Platform's LLPG service

The MCS Platform subscribes to the Address Based® Premium (ABP) Service.  The Customer or User can only select from a pre-populated list of addresses, as these are UK addresses, these will have the full list of attributes such as geo-coordinates, postcodes and UPRN making selection of an address more accurate.

The Address Based® Premium (ABP) Service is provided by Ordnance Survey.  It is derived from the following sources:-

  • Royal Mail PAF

  • National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG)

  • One Scotland Gazetteer

  • VOA Non Domestic Rates

  • VOA Council Tax

  • OS Mastermap Topography Layer

  • OS Mastermap Integrated Networks Layer

The NLPG is derived from data sent to the National hub from individual Local Authorities’ LLPGs .

The dataset is updated on a 6 weekly basis after a matching process of these datasets and is issues as a ‘release’.  For each release, the dates of the dataset from which the matching takes places are available on-line.

Details of the service we subscribe to is available here:-

There can be discrepancies because of non-matching from these datasources.  As an example,  if a URPN is set to provisional, historic or not matched to PAF means that it’s not included in the dataset.   Sometimes this is the case because of differences between records set in LLPG level incorrectly i.e a UPRN could have been mistakingly set to provisional rather than current and therefore sent to the NLPG.
